European Employment Insights: June 2026 – Pay transparency: European labour law is changing faster than ever
In the June issue of Andersen Employment Insights, experts from over a dozen European countries analyse the changes that are already affecting employers and HR teams.
Here are a few topics that are particularly worth noting:
Pay Transparency Directive is no longer just a proposal. Italy has already implemented the directive, Latvia has published draft regulations, and in Austria, discussions are underway regarding the practical challenges associated with job evaluation, reporting and the assessment of ‘work of equal value’.
Regulatory bodies are gaining new tools. In Poland, from July, employers will be able to request interpretations from the National Labour Inspectorate (PIP) regarding forms of employment. In Croatia, higher penalties for illegal employment are planned, whilst the Slovak Labour Inspectorate indicates that the greatest risks continue to relate to employee records and working time.
Courts are increasingly turning to EU law. In Ireland, the labour tribunal awarded compensation exceeding the statutory limit, ruling that this was required to ensure the effectiveness of the protection afforded by EU law.
These are just a few examples among dozens of changes described by authors from across Europe.
Poland – key insights:
- New powers for the National Labour Inspectorate (PIP) from July
- A simplified procedure for temporary residence permits for nationals of selected third countries
- The possibility for employees with disabilities to obtain a work-health doctor’s approval for standard working hours as early as the preliminary medical examination stage
- Managers’ right to overtime pay in the event of a persistent and flawed organisation of work attributable to the employer
